Learning & Teaching

In 2024, Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) introduced the Vision for Instruction, a system‑wide approach designed to ensure every child receives the highest quality teaching.

This vision is part of the broader MACS 2030: Forming Lives to Enrich the World strategic plan, which aims for all MACS schools to be leaders in excellence, equity and Catholic identity.

What this means for your child

The Vision for Instruction ensures that all MACS schools deliver:

  • Excellence – a knowledge‑rich, evidence‑based curriculum
  • Equity – every student achieving strong literacy and numeracy foundations

At St Martin de Porres, this vision comes to life in a way that is warm, personal and deeply connected to our community.

How Children Learn Best

Research in cognitive science gives us clear insights into how children learn. At St Martin de Porres, we use these principles every day to help students grow with confidence.

Children learn best when:

  • new learning connects to what they already know
  • lessons are clear, structured and purposeful
  • classrooms are calm, predictable and focused
  • they have many chances to practise and revisit key ideas
  • teachers provide strong modelling and helpful feedback
  • they feel safe, supported and known

These evidence‑based practices help every child build strong foundations that last.

Our Strengths as a School

A personalised approach

We know every child is unique. Our teachers take the time to understand each learner’s strengths, interests and needs. We use ongoing assessment to plan the right next steps so every child experiences success.

Strong relationships

Our school is built on trust, care and genuine partnership. We work closely with families and value open, honest communication. When school and home work together, children flourish.

Explicit, high‑quality teaching

Our teachers use clear, direct instruction when introducing new concepts, followed by guided practice and independent learning. This approach is proven to support all learners, including those who need extra challenge or additional support.

A calm and predictable environment

We prioritise routines, consistency and wellbeing. When children feel safe and know what to expect, they can focus, take risks and grow as learners.

A vibrant, student‑centred culture

We encourage curiosity, creativity and a love of learning. Students are supported to think deeply, ask questions and take ownership of their learning journey.

A commitment to excellence

Our programs are guided by the Victorian Curriculum and the Religious Education Curriculum for the Archdiocese of Melbourne. Learning is carefully sequenced so knowledge builds over time, helping students develop strong understanding across all areas.

Our Vision for Every Learner

We want every child at St Martin de Porres to become:

  • confident and capable
  • curious and creative
  • resilient and persistent
  • strong communicators
  • thoughtful, responsible citizens
  • lifelong learners who love learning
